Online Chat Safety: Red Flags You Should Not Ignore
Recognize pressure, impersonation, money requests and unsafe attempts to move a conversation off-platform.
Most online conversations are ordinary, but a small number involve scams, harassment or attempts to collect personal information. Safety does not require assuming everyone is dishonest. It means slowing down when a request creates urgency, secrecy or pressure.
Watch for urgency and money requests
Romance and friendship scams often build emotion quickly and then introduce an emergency. Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, account credentials or financial documents to someone you only know online.
A convincing story is not verification. Scammers may reuse photos, imitate real people or claim that a video call is temporarily impossible.
- Unexpected emergency
- Request for money or gift cards
- Investment or crypto pressure
Protect contact and identity information
Be careful with phone numbers, home or work locations, identification documents and private photos. Moving off-platform removes some reporting and moderation tools, so there is no need to rush.
Someone who repeatedly asks for private information after you hesitate is showing you that they do not respect boundaries. Block and report rather than arguing.
- Pressure to move immediately to another app
- Requests for private images
- Questions about passwords, codes or financial accounts
Use block and report early
You do not need proof beyond doubt before protecting yourself. Save relevant evidence where lawful, use the platform’s reporting tools, and stop responding to threats or manipulation.
If anyone appears to be under 18 in an adult community, or if content suggests exploitation or immediate danger, stop the conversation and report it through the platform’s safety process. Contact local emergency or specialist services when someone may be in immediate danger.
- Block unwanted contact
- Report threats, exploitation and impersonation
- Do not investigate serious risk yourself
Zupali tools offer general ideas, not guarantees. Never pressure someone to reply, meet, share private information or continue a conversation.
